Tutoring tips

Overwhelmed by math and science classes

Practice, practice, practice. Daily practice and repetition are important for learning any material. Try to keep up with class homework and practice exercises. At the same time, be sure to take breaks when you’re stressed or burned out.

Review often. One of the best ways to remember new material is to review it soon after class. Try to read over your notes that evening after class. The more times you think about something, the more it will “stick.”

Come to tutoring prepared. Please bring your class textbook or other assigned materials to tutoring sessions. Bring specific questions about the material and we’ll try to cover those topics. Please read the assigned material at least once BEFORE a tutoring session.

Ask questions in class. There’s no such thing as a “dumb” question. If you’re wondering about something, it’s likely that other people are also.

Homework: It doesn’t benefit anyone if I do your homework for you. If you have a question about a homework problem, we can talk about how you might approach a similar problem but the work you turn in has to be your own.

Don’t get discouraged. There’s a reason why doctors and engineers get paid so well – science and math are challenging subjects. Our goal is to make them interesting and even fun.
